Book Discussion

The Books Alive! Book Discussion group will be discussing The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith in June.  Stop by and pick up a copy and then join the group on June 16th at 2pm.

Read on the Wild Side

Pre-schoolers to 6th graders can Read on the Wild Side this summer. Registration begins Monday, June 1st.  There are activities planned for each age group, but the most important activity is the fun of reading books!

Since this year's program has a wild life theme, the Children's Department has decided to adopt an animal at Brookfield Zoo.  We are asking all the summer reading particitpants to donate one penny for every book read to pay to adopt the animal.  Children can vote for an animal to adopt from June 1-June 7 in the Children's Department.

First Monday Movie

This month's movie is the just released 1941 classic Man Hunt.  It stars Walter Pidgeon and Joan Bennett.
It will start at 10:30 am in the Community Room on Monday, June 1.

Summer Reading

Time for Summer Reading!  This year kids, teens and adults all have summer reading programs. Join in the fun. You can register starting June 1st for the kids and adults programs.  Teens registration starts June 8th.

Library Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees is Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30pm.  They meet in the 2nd floor Conference Room.

Library Closing

The Library will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th.  We will re-open on Tuesday at 10:00am.

Film Discussion

This week's film is "The Exterminating Angel".  Here's a review from Roger Ebert at the Sun-Times.  It will be shown Friday, May 22 at 7pm.

Books Alive

Our book discussion is less than a week away!  Have you read "Gardens of Water" by Alan Drew yet?  You can pick up a copy at the Circulation Desk.  The discussion will be held on May 19 at 2pm in the Conference Room.

City Beautiful: Celebrating the Burnham Plan

The year 2009 marks the centennial of Daniel Burnham's visionary plan for Chicago and the environs.  Burnham's plan shaped the city and suburbs for generations of residents and visitors to enjoy.

Art historian Jeff Mishur returns on Monday, May 18 at 7pm to present this slide lecture exploring the Burnham plan along with its origins and sources. Learn about the full scope of the 1909 plan and its relationship to European and American precedents.  Follow the transition from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition to the City Beautiful Movement so eloquently manifested in Burnham's plan for Chicago.

This lecture in in memory of long time Library volunteer Margaret Buhler.

Read to the Dogs

Beginning readers are invited to come read to our faithful dog listeners on Thursday, May 14 at 7pm.  Each reader may sign up for a 15 minute time period to read to one of our visiting dogs.
