Mother's Day
Mental Floss Magazine has a great article on 5 things worth knowing about Mother's Day.
The celebration has been going on in some manner for hundreds of years.
Mother's Day as we know it in America came about in 1908 when Anna M. Jarvis wanted to honor her mother who had recently passed away. She gave 2 white carnations to every mother who came to the memorial service at St. Andrew's Methodist Church. The service was so successful that Anna quit her job, and traveled across the country petitioning state and local governments to establish a day for mothers.
In 1912, her home state of West Virginia recognized the holiday, then in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national observance.
St. Andrew's Memorial Church now houses the the Mother's Day Shrine and Museum. It can be found in
Grafton, West Virginia.
