Ever bookmark a site on one computer and then wish you could have that bookmark on another. I've got just what you need - a social bookmarking site.
Here's another CommonCraft video to help explain it - Social Bookmarking in Plain English
Social bookmarking sites and many other web pages use tagging to help organize your sites. Tagging is just like adding subject headings to books. Libraries have been doing this forever. The difference is there is no standardized vocabulary for the tags. Each person decides what tags make sense to them, and it might not be the same tags you'd choose.
Delicious (or del.icio.us) was the first social bookmarking site. Digg and reddit are social news gathering sites.
Many libraries have delicious accounts. You can find ours here: delicious.com/lagrangeparklibrary. Bookmarks can be shared between departments so all have access.
Let's set up a delicious account. First go to delicious. Click on the Join Now box (hint: its on the top right). Fill in all the boxes on the next screen. You can skip the next two pages (step 2 and step 3). Enter a URL and add a tag or two. There is a way to make your bookmarks private by checking the "mark as private" box. Click save.
You can also download a button for your toolbar to make bookmarking easier. If you are using your own computer this is a great feature.
Post your ideas about this site on your blog. Do think you can find ways to use it? What about a planning a family reunion or vacation and everybody can add their favorite places as possibilities.
